The Heart of New Ulm’s Food Environment Action Team is once again hosting Power of Produce Days at both the KNUJ Farmers Market in New Ulm and the Springfield Riverside Farmers Market held at Riverside Park. This year, in New Ulm, there will be one event day designed for youth ages 4-12, and one event day for senior citizens age 60 and older. In Springfield, there will be two event days for youth and two event days for senior citizens.
New Ulm: On Saturday, Aug. 19 from 9 to 11 a.m., the first 50 families who stop by the Heart of New Ulm’s table at the farmers market at German Park will receive $10 in produce dollars to use for produce at the market (no jams, jelly, honey, meat or baked goods). On Thursday, Aug. 24 from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m., the first 50 senior citizen households who stop by the Heart of New Ulm’s table at the market at Cash Wise Foods will receive $10 in produce dollars to use for produce at the market (no jams, jelly, honey, meat or baked goods).
Springfield: On Tuesdays, Aug. 8 and 15 from 3 to 6 p.m., the first 35 families who stop by the Heart of New Ulm’s table at the farmers market will receive $10 in produce dollars to use for produce at the market (no jams, jelly, honey, meat or baked goods). On Tuesdays, Aug. 22 and 29 from 3 to 6 p.m., the first 35 senior citizen households who stop by the Heart of New Ulm’s table at the market will receive $10 in produce dollars to use for produce at the market (no jams, jelly, honey, meat or baked goods).
This year’s Power of Produce Days in Springfield are made possible thanks to a grant from the Pieschel Family Foundation.
The Power of Produce Day aims to encourage families with children or senior citizens to visit their local farmers market, support local produce vendors, and encourage youth and seniors to make healthier food choices by offering them money to purchase their own produce at the market.
