It Takes a Village!

It takes all of us to continue our success. Every business, organization and household in Brown County benefits.

Since 2009, people in New Ulm have been working together to inspire and support each other and create a healthier community for all of us. That hard work has paid off and New Ulm residents continue to embrace and support healthier lifestyles. In fact, according to a 2018 community survey, 94 percent of adults agreed or strongly agreed that New Ulm creates an environment that supports a healthy lifestyle!

A foundation built on partnerships

HONU now works to improve health in the greater Brown County area, and it’s our partnerships with many community organizations and individuals that provide the foundation for everything we do. That means HONU’s success depends on everyone in our community. Working together, we can collectively make the healthy choice the easy choice where we live, work, learn and play. Please join us! "I was told at age 70 that I needed to have major heart surgery, in my case open heart surgery, to replace a valve. It was comforting to also be told that I was a great candidate for successful surgery meaning, I was not a tobacco user, and I was physically fit, from years of running and walking. I credit the Heart of New Ulm with impressing on me the need, no matter your age, to stay active, watch your diet, and eat fruits and veggies etc. The Heart of New Ulm has and will continue to advocate for our good health. Take their message seriously and keep moving!"

"Personal health and well-being is very important to me so I strive to practice what I recommend to my patients. I see food as medicine so our family is focused on healthy eating to maintain good health. The Heart of New Ulm is a major reason why we decided to relocate from the Twin Cities to New Ulm. I am so impressed with the project."

“The Heart of New Ulm has put New Ulm on the map across the country for its work to improve the health of a community and has made a positive difference in the lives of many Brown County residents. An example is the success that New Ulm Medical Center has had in recruiting physicians and other healthcare professionals – there are many reasons for this success, but I am confident that our work in community health is a factor!”

“What we do every day — what we eat, how we live, the relationships we have — impacts our health much more than what happens in our hospitals and clinics. The Heart of New Ulm is a national leader in promoting a culture of wellness, constantly working to help New Ulm residents lead healthy lives.”

"The Heart of New Ulm has created policies, processes and new ideas to incorporate into our worksite wellness initiatives so I don’t have to always come up with ideas. The project truly makes the community more aware that they are responsible and can make a difference in their own personal health with just small changes. With today’s health-focused generations and insurance costs rising, it's also a recruiting tool for employers to use to entice new people to come live in our community, giving them more options for their personal health."
